   <title>Foresthill Road (Bridge) Traffic Update </title>
   <link>http://www.foresthillbridgerenewal.com/images/traffic/TA216.pdf</link>
 <description>
3/7/13 News Update:
The Contractor will require a Full Road Closure and Traffic Detour to place a crane on the North deck of the bridge to erect large steel assemblies on the top of the concrete columns. The North side of the bridge currently carries both directions of traffic making this closure unavoidable.
Starting April 1, 2013 to April 5, 2013, Placer County Department of Public Works will completely close the Foresthill Road Bridge and provide a temporary traffic detour during the hours of 8:30 am to 3:30 pm (Monday through Friday). The detour routes including Lincoln Way, Highway 49 and Old Auburn Foresthill Road will be clearly marked with signs and message boards. Road barriers will also be placed at the intersections of Foresthill Road and Lincoln Way and at Foresthill Road and Old Auburn Foresthill Road.
The hiking trails under the bridge will also be closed as a safety precaution during the same hours, please plan accordingly. Click the title to read more.

   <title>Foresthill Road Bridge Construction Traffic Alert </title>
   <link>http://www.foresthillbridgerenewal.com/images/traffic/TA216.pdf</link>
 <description>Effective August 30th, all westbound and eastbound traffic will be routed on the newly widened section of the Foresthill Bridge. Both westbound and eastbound traffic will travel along the northern side of the bridge to allow crews to continue working along the south side. Due to safety concerns, the south side pedestrian walkway over the bridge will be closed while crews continue the retrofit and painting activities.
Placer County Department of Public Works has closed the Foresthill Road Bridge to permit loading for the duration of the project. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your cooperation and patience as Placer County continues work on the new Foresthill Bridge Renewal Project.
Please note that the speed limit within the construction zone is 35 mph. Traffic violations within the "construction zone" result in doubled fines and CHP will be enforcing the 35 mph speed limit.
For updates, questions or concerns, please contact the project hotline at (530) 889-5873 or visit the project website at www.foresthillbridgerenewal.com and sign up to receive traffic alerts and progress updates.

   <title>Foresthill Bridge Renewal FAQ </title>
   <link>http://www.foresthillbridgerenewal.com/images/docs/FAQ.pdf</link>
 <description>When will construction start and how long will it last?
Construction on the Foresthill Bridge Seismic Retrofit and Paint Project began in January 2011 and will be completed in 2014.
Why is construction necessary and how much will it cost?
The Foresthill Bridge was built in the 1970's and after a recent assessment, was determined to require a seismic retrofit to improve integrity and performance during a seismic event. The project will also include new paint for the bridge and is estimated to cost $74.4 million ($58.4 + 10% contingency for Construction and $9.7 for Construction Engineering).
How is this project being funded?
The bridge is on the mandatory seismic retrofit list which means that 100% of the seismic retrofit is being paid through federal and state funds. 88.53% of the retrofit is federally funded with another 11.47% funded through state Prop 1B seismic funds. For the paint portion of the work, 88.53% will be funded federally with the remaining 11.47% being funded through Placer County's Prop 1B Local Street and Road Funds. The total cost to the County is $3 million.
What work will be done to the bridge?
Construction on this project will include the following improvements to the existing structure:
1. Retrofitting the existing bridge by removing and replacing existing structural steel elements
2. Painting
3. New concrete bridge decking
4. Raising the pedestrian railing from 4 feet to 6½ feet
5. Constructing a new catwalk system for bridge maintenance
6. Replacing existing bridge deck joint seals and assemblies
Will the bridge be completely shut down during construction?
The County is working closely with the Contractor to limit traffic impacts. Work will require occasional traffic controls and lane closures, however, full closures will be kept to a minimum. Pedestrian and bicycle access will be maintained at all times. All potential traffic impact information will be distributed to the public prior to the designated work.
How can I find out about traffic impacts during construction and stay updated on the progress of the construction project?
Communication with the local and traveling public is a priority for the County. For updates, questions or concerns, please contact the project hotline at (530) 889-5873 or visit the project Web site at www.foresthillbridgerenewal.com and sign up to receive traffic alerts and progress updates. A representative will respond to inquiries within 24 hours. The County will also be distributing information via local media outlets and community partners.
Will the new bridge include a bicycle lane or be striped with Class 2 bike lanes?
Bike lanes will not be added to the bridge, however, the project will result in a wider deck surface because crews will be decking over the open median. The shoulders will also be striped to be 8' wide which will provide a more comfortable space for bicyclists crossing the bridge.
During construction, will access to area parking and the trailheads to the Auburn State Recreation Area remain open? Is there an alternative public parking location?
During construction, parking will be impacted at various times to ensure the safety of the public; however, all trailheads will remain accessible through the duration of construction. Because the Contractor is utilizing the pull-out areas closest to the bridge, recreational users will be required to use pull-out areas located further away for parking.

   <title>WORK SET TO BEGIN ON FORESTHILL BRIDGE - Traffic Alerts and Website Notifications Available </title>
   <link>http://www.foresthillbridgerenewal.com/images/docs/fbrnews2011.pdf</link>
 <description> Work on the $74.7 million seismic retrofit and painting project for the Foresthill Bridge is set to begin. The Placer County Department of Public Works is reminding residents and travelers that they can register for e-mail traffic alerts for the project.

The contractor, Golden State Bridge, has begun staging equipment and construction trailers at both ends of the span in anticipation of actual construction work. The work that will begin in the coming weeks includes:

•	Strengthening the bridge abutments at both ends;
•	Installing work platforms on the underside of the bridge; and
•	Replacing the pedestrian railing;

Traffic across the 2,428-foot span, which spans the North Fork of the American River, will be routed into one lane for short periods beginning the end of February. The shifting of vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be done on alternate sides as work on the pedestrian railing is performed. There will be no parking permitted on the side of the road where railing replacement is taking place. This is intended to prevent pedestrians from parking on one side of the roadway and then crossing traffic to get to the other, open side of the bridge.

Golden State will be using the pullout areas closest to the bridge for its staging area. Recreational users have to use pullout areas further away from the bridge. While this may create an inconvenience for some users, it will help ensure the safety of construction workers, the traveling public, and area recreational users. Trailheads will remain accessible to the public when it is safe to keep them open. The project will not result in new bike lanes. However, when complete, there will be 8-foot shoulders on the bridge, in addition to separate, 5-foot sidewalks.

To strengthen the bridge abutments, the contractor will have to create openings beneath the bridge deck in the concrete boxes at both ends of the bridge that house the abutments. These openings are necessary to get equipment to the abutments to perform the work.

Over the spring, most of the work will center on providing access for the contractor to perform the work including the installation of work platforms under the bridge. There will be two temporary platforms installed under the bridge for use during construction. These platforms, which will be in place for about three years, will be used to perform the seismic strengthening, installing the new catwalk and prepping and painting the bridge.

Approximately 89 percent of the funding for the project comes from the Highway Bridge Program portion of the Federal Highway Trust fund, which is derived from federal fuel tax. The remaining 11 percent, including Placer County's $3 million share, comes from State Proposition 1B bond funds. These bond proceeds are funneled through the state to the County for use only on transportation projects. The federal funding can only be used on bridges. The Foresthill Bridge is on a mandatory seismic retrofit list. If Placer County does not use the federal funding, it would be given to another jurisdiction with a bridge on the retrofit list.
